If you have been involved in ultralight aviation, or hang gliding the name
Lookout Mountain Flight Park will be very familiar to you. Since 1978
Lookout Mountain has been a premier flight training facility for hang
glider pilots and more recently trike pilots. With flight training being
provided 7 days a week during the summer and 5 days a week in the winter
by 15 instructors.
This year at Sun N Fun Lookout Mountain was at the
show with three craft that they have added to their fleet, The Aeros
Venture, the Skycycle, and the Powerlite Trike from Airtime Products.
The "Venture" from Aeros utilizes all of the load bearing structures
of the legendary Aeros trike but adds the style of an enclosed fairing.
Addressed in the redesigning of the trike were "pilot ergonomics." The
pilot seat frames have been widened, as has the area around the
passenger's feet. A small windshield has been added, and the instrument
panel has been recessed into the fairing, and painted with an anti-glare
paint.
The Venture also has a folding pylon which makes it possible for one
person to attach the wing onto the trike. The main landing gear features
automobile shock absorbers for rough field operation. The load-carrying
frame is made of aircraft alloy D16T 60 x 40 x 2.
The Venture is set up for a number of engines including the Rotax 503,
Rotax 582, Rotax 912, BMW, and Subaru.
Skycycle
The Skycycle - For those looking for an economical, very low center of
gravity trike the SkyCycle should fit the bill. This light weight trike
comes ready to fly. It is powered by a 22 hp, 250 Zenoah engine, with air
restart capability. Has a 2.5 to 1 belt reduction drive spinning a 54"
wooden propeller, 2 1/2 gallon fuel tank, and a heat treated chromoly
landing gear. Total weight comes in at only 95 lbs.
Powerlite Trike
The Powerlite Trikes have been designed to fit a hang
glider wing. They are powered by the single cylinder Corsair engine which
has a displacement of 172.5 cc and puts out 21 hp. using a 1:1.0 to 1:2.6
Poly V belt reduction drive.
The trikes total weight is only 86 lbs. Depending
on the wing used cruise will come in at between 40 and 50 mph with a climb
rate in the 500 foot per minute range.
The units are quick and easy to set up, have electric
start, and are equipped with a charging system.
The Claw - Aircraft Anchoring System
The Claw - Looking to protect their aircraft in windy conditions The
Claw which is described as an "Aircraft Anchoring System" was on display
at the Lookout Mountain booth.
The
Claw looks like the base of a tripod, with the ends of the tripod having a
slanted hole in it. You place the tripod on the ground, then place three
long AN bolts into slotted holes, then if necessary you pound the bolts
into the ground.
In the center of the Claw there is a loop, you attach your tie down
rope to the loop and then to your craft. The "Claw" kit comes with 3
anchors, 9 spikes, 1 hammer, 20 feet of rope, and a storage bag.
According to the literature the whole kit weighs 8 lbs, and has a
combined system capacity of 3600 lbs. which is ideal for ultralights and
light aircraft.
