Three mice are being chased by a cat. The mice were cornered when one of
the mice turned around and barked, "Ruff! Ruff! Ruff!" The surprised cat ran
away scared. Later when the mice told their mother what happened, she smiled
and said, "You see, it pays to be bilingual!"
RadCam engine, by Mark Bierle of Earthstar aviation.
Rad-Cam 8 cylinder radial engine - Over the years of covering Sun
N Fun and Airventure I have had the opportunity to interview Mark
Bierle a number of times. Some of the interviews have been on his
single and two place ultralights and ultralight trainers. But a
number of other interviews have been on engines.
Why engines? It
seems that Mark was always looking for "that perfect engine."
Well he must have gotten tired of looking - because this year at
Paradise City he had on display a little 8 cylinder 2 cycle radial engine,
of his own design.
According to Mark "the engine is different from other radial
engines in that it has a cam in the center rather than a
crankshaft." "the use of this cam design allows for better fuel
burn and combustion, with considerably less emissions."
The all out weight of the engine is 50 lbs. and Mark is
targeting for 60 horsepower. The prototype now has 20 hours of
running on it. The engine is currently running using carburetors
but it is planned to have fuel injection available as well. The
ignition is an MSB CDI battery powered ignition, Mark also plans
to use the "Smart Plugs" ignition system.
The current engine reaches 3600 rpm, and direct drives the
propeller. The engine is equipped with electric start, and
the production engines will have generating systems. Targeted TBO
on the engine is 1000 hours.
Mark expects to have an engine flying on one of his planes" in
a matter of weeks" "with production units available in about 8
months."
