| Flying K Enterprises Inc. had one of their Skyraiders on display
with the Hexatron Industries, Hexadyne P60
aircraft engine. Fred Parker of Flying K indicated he had
been talking to the factory about installing the P 60 since
Oshkosh last year, and they came up and designed a mount for the
plane. The engine
and mount arrived at the factory about three weeks prior to the show and
while the installation was easy, (the Hexadyne P60 uses a 4 point
dyna-focal mount coming of the rear of the engine similar to that
used in conventional aircraft) a few bugs were found in the
placement of some of the electrical components, which precluded
the engine being flown at Sun N Fun. According to Fred
the engine on display was the original prototype with over 1300
hours of running time on it. The engine had been torn down prior
to installation and the only sign of wear was a seal on the output
shaft of the gear drive. Fred reports "the engine has a slight
vibration at low rpm, but smooths right out once power is
applied." "The power is phenomenal, at Sun N Fun the engine
would move the plane all over, with two guys holding the wings and
brakes applied." Currently the engine is being used with a
Powerfin F series 68 inch with 11 degrees of pitch, which is about
the same prop combination that a 582 Rotax would use. The Hexadyne P60
is a twin cylinder 797 cc, opposed four
stroke air-cooled engine producing 60 hp at 5750 rpm, weighing 98
lbs. It has 4
valves per cylinder, for better heat dissipation, has a low 9.0 to
1 compression ratio for longer engine life, and uses plain
bearings in the journals, for less weight, and economy of
replacement. The engine is fuel injected, single ignition,
except each cylinder fired from different coil, TBO is expected to
be well over 1,000 hours. For more information contact:
