Krücker Manufacturing
Limited - and the Kalypso trike.
If you were to hear the word "Kalypso" your
mind automatically dreams up visions of "tropical islands, sea
breezes, scantily clad damsels dancing in front of open fires. But
if you had of heard the word Kalypso at Sun N Fun's Lakeland
Florida you would have been brought back from this dream with a
thud, to learn that it is an amphibious ultralight "Trike" built
not on some tropical isle but in Northern Ontario Canada, an area
more know for it's cold winters, nickel mines and timber
harvesting.
The Kalypso is the brainchild of
Jean-Pierre Krücker, it is a truly amphibious
trike. The Kalypso features an ultralight trike, with a 3 wheel
retractable undercarriage, mounted on two aluminum floats. This
allows for take offs from land, in-flight retraction of the gear
for landing on water via the twin float system.
The retract system
is electrically powered with a manual back up, and is strong
enough to lift the trike unit and floats clear of the ground on
land if necessary. The twin seat, tandem seating craft
makes an ideal trainer, which can be used on both land and water.
The Krucker floats are made from 5052
aluminum, the same used for pontoon boats, and weigh in at only 93
lbs mounted. All of the seams in the floats are welded rather than
riveted, and the three chamber floats provide 1800 lbs of
floatation. The floats and rigging come from the factory
powder coated.
According to the factory "Krucker floats do
not require a splashguard or skirt to keep the water from spraying
into the prop or on the pilot, and allows two passengers
with a fast wing to fly off the water with only a 503 Rotax engine
and a B-box, without porpoising or doing any of the scary things
associated with floats designed for 3-axis craft."
