Float plane pilots are always looking for that perfect amphib set up,
something that isn't draggy, works quick, is simple to operate and WORKS!
Two different groups are working together to design something that they
think will fit this bill. The new Kolb Aircraft Company, and
Slipstream International, have taken a set of Slipstream floats and
modified them with a very unique retract system that is hidden inside the
float when retracted and folds out when needed to land on land.
The unit is very aerodynamic, light weight, strong, and uses the
aircraft's hard points for transferring loads from the float back to the
aircraft. In the down and locked position the cylinder moves it into
position and a second system ensures it locks. If the system looses
pressure the system can be set up ahead of time to either go to a full
down lock position, or a full up lock position depend ing
on the pilots preference.
The amphib float system will be available for Slipstream floats for
floats from 800 lbs. capacity to 1600 lbs. The system adds approximately
25 lbs to the weight of the float.
The system uses a set of main gear and a set of castering tail wheels
that are mounted to rear attachment hard points designed into the floats,
which are also used for mounting the water rudders.
