Rotax engines
were originally designed for snowmobile application, we took them and put
them on our planes, which introduced Rotax engines into our sport. Rotax
is now the largest supplier of engines for ultralights and light sport
aircraft in world.
A company that has taken another engine an engine from the automotive
industry and made a name for themselves in aircraft engine and re drive
conversions is Raven ReDrive.
Raven has offered a number of Suzuki automobile engine conversions for
nearly 10 years, and currently have over 200 units flying worldwide. Raven
has recently added a new 3500 square foot R & D facility, to begin
offering "turn key engine packages for light sport aircraft."
This year a number of customers brought their aircraft to Airventure.
One on display in the Raven booth was their new "three cylinder Suzuki
turbo upgrade kit for the Kolb Mark 111." This add on upgrade takes the
standard 3 cylinder 60 hp Suzuki engine up to "the same take off power as
a 912 Rotax."
They also had their new flat 4, 90 hp engine, which is a 4 cylinder Suzuki
auto conversion turned sideways. This packages is lighter than a standard
Rotax 912 with more horsepower.
Raven has also developed an engine package for the Chinook Plus from
Canada. This package has an engine mount and redrive that is integral to
the airframe, which comes in at the same weight as the Rotax 582 when
installed.
Each of the Raven packages, or kits comes with a comprehensive manual
that shows "How to do it." According to builders savings on the cost
of engines compared to Rotax prices can be 50% or more.
