Early Bird Jenny - by Early Bird Aviation.

Over the years I have had the privilege of interviewing Dennis Wiley designer of the WW 1 replica fighter the Early Bird Jenny.

I have also had the opportunity to interview a number of builders Dennis's plane.

Early Bird Jenny instrument panel. This year Richard Kosi of Peru Illinois was at Airventure with a recently completed Jenny, powered by an HKS 60 HP two cylinder 4 stroke aircraft engine.

The Early Bird Jenny is 2/3 scale plans built aircraft. Richard took some 20 months and 1,375 hours to finish his Jenny.
(Richard was awarded Grand Champion Light Sport Aircraft at Airventure.)

According to Richard the 3 sets of plans for the plane and the manual are "excellent" and Dennis is there to answer any questions. His craft was built in a 30 x 40 foot hangar, with no special tools required to complete it.

The fuselage is made from welded 4130 chromoly steel, while the wings are tubular spars using "Easy Riser" ribs. Richard covered his Jenny with poly fibre and 14 coats of paint which included 4 coats of silver nitrate. Early Bird Jenny powered by HKS aircraft engine.

When powered by the 60 horsepower HKS 700 E climb rate is over 500 feet a minute, cruise 60 to 65 mph hour.

Controls are standard stick and rudder pedal aircraft controls both front and back. Fuel on board was 10 gallons, with the HKS sipping back just over 2.5 gallons per hour.

First flight was on November 17, '01 by mistake. The plane flies very well and I have since taken much more enjoyable "planned" flights. Looking over the wings in flight is like living a dream.

Having just purchased a new insulated 1000 sq ft workshop, I am now at the materials ordering stage. This is my first homebuilt and, as a Canadian plan to build it with the "Canuck" vertical stabilizer and rudder. If any of you Jenny builders can offer tips for me as I begin to jig up the fuselage I would be greatful.
