This power package was used until the early 90's when it was updated to
a more efficient system, which uses a higher reduction drive ratio,
allowing the use of larger props with more pitch and or blades.
At the same time Rotax introduced the Rotax 503 provision 8
50 HP engine with a stronger crankshaft and larger crankshaft bearings.
With the
dual carb 503 and the newer reduction unit Challenger owners a noticeable
improvement in climb and cruiser performance, enhanced float plane
operation, with less noise and vibration.
At Airventure this year a number of Challengers were on display with
Rotax's latest Rotax 582 Blue Head, liquid cooled 65 horsepower engines.
Two mounts used the standard Rotax upright radiator system for cooling,
with the rads located on either side of the rear fuselage directly in
front of the engine compartment. The rads had a set of air scoops to
direct air into them for cooling.
Another mount used a larger flat radiator mounted flat above the wing,
with oil injection tanks running down either side.
In talking to one of the owners who had changed from the Rotax 503 to
the 582, he indicated the climb performance was nearly halve again that of
a 503 and the cruise rpm could be reduced to 5200 from nearly 6,000. |
