MZ - engines had a new dealer and service center for their engines at
Airventure R & D Aerosport of WAUSAU, Wisconsin. R & D has been building exhaust
systems for the past 19 years. When used on ultralight
engines such as Rotax, MZ, Hirth or 2si they can increase power by as much as
20%. On the 503 Rotax alone they offer 3 different pipes which bring the
standard dual carb 503 from 48 hp to 58, 60, or 62 hp.R & D also had on display their new Legal Lite, an ultralight designed specifically to fit into the U.S. part 103 regulations, at a price of only $6995.00 U.S. The fuselage and wings come as a 25 hour kit, with covering taking approximately another 40 hours. The airframe is set up MZ 34 - 32 hp two stroke engine with electric start. While the craft hasn't flown yet cruise is expected to come in at 55 mph, with a 27 mph landing speed. The Legal Lite uses stand stick and rudder controls, with ailerons, has a steerable nose wheel and comes with mechanical brakes. R & D also had on display another first, a hand built 1304
Rotax engine. The 1304 is actually two Rotax 670 engines combines
on a common crankshaft. (These will be the first two stroke
engines ever to enter the race.)
The engine is going to be used in a Veri Ezy which will race at the Reno Air Races in Nevada. Two engines are being built, one with 280 hp and another with 360 hp. They have a 17 to 1 compression ratio and will be run on 119 Octane fuel. As they will be running full throttle for the complete race R & D described them as "ticking time bombs!"
